Voters’ Guide 2008: House District 118
By Chris Busby
Man, what a disappointment District 118 is this year.
Composed of the West End, Libbytown and part of the USM neighborhood, this is the site of Green Rep. John Eder’s bitter defeat to now incumbent Democrat Jon Hinck in ’06. In ’04, Eder edged out then-upstart Dem Ed Suslovic on this turf. And before that, we saw the Green’s trailblazing 2002 victory in the portion of this district then known as District 31, the area former Democratic House Speaker Mike Saxl defended against other early Green contenders in 1998 and 2000.
This year, it’s Hinck vs. nobody. The Greens got a guy named Joshua Miller on the ballot, but he’s not actually running — no campaign signs or materials, no return phone calls to media seeking interviews and info, etc..
Hinck didn’t bother to respond to our request for an interview for this Voters’ Guide, leading us to wonder who’s lamer: Hinck or the local Green Independent Party. There isn’t even a rumor of a stealth Eder write-in campaign.
Bummer, dude. Pass the hummus.
