CLASH OF THE TINYS
Round 5: Marie Stella vs. The RattleSnakes
This week’s Clash tests the theory that a musical act’s popularity always surges right after the artist dies or the band breaks up. The noisy indie-rock group Marie Stella cashed in its chips earlier this month. Fronted by singer and bassist Sydney Bourke, with the ubiquitous Bryan Bruchman manning one of the guitars, the band released an EP last year and a couple other tracks, including a cover of “Little Lines” that appeared on a big-name Guided By Voices tribute comp.
The RattleSnakes have been playing punk rock for about five years now. God forbid they should ever break up. “The Nod” kicks off their 2010 full-length, Spread for the Wide Eagle. Instead of disintegrating, the ‘Snakes, originally a trio, seem to be adding a member every year (word is they’re a five-piece these days). At that pace, they’ll be Chicago by the end of the decade.
