Politics & Other Mistakes

The worst political stuff in Maine

Here’s my collection of the most obnoxious turds clogging up this state’s political toilet, in no particular order:

The Maine Wire’s racist coverage of any crime committed by a person who isn’t white, and its transphobic coverage of anyone who changes their gender.

Portland’s plan to deal with homeless people by not really dealing with homeless people.

The Portland City Council’s plan to create more homeless people by raising property taxes.

Democratic 2nd District Congressman Jared Golden’s nonexistent public-relations skills.

U.S. Sen. Angus King’s phony independence.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ lame excuses for being a Republican tool.

Democrat Rachel Talbot Ross’s minimal administrative skills while serving as Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. Now Talbot Ross is moving to the state Senate to sow more chaos there.

Retired Republican state Sen. Eric Brakey’s call for the entire 2nd Congressional District to secede and follow him as he moves to New Hampshire.

Term limits, which eliminated much of the institutional knowledge in the Legislature. They were originally supposed to get rid of long-serving power-grabbers like Democratic state Rep. John Martin of Eagle Lake, who was just elected to his 11,345th term.

The Lewiston Sun Journal’s lame coverage of legislative races.

The Portland Press Herald’s lame coverage of legislative races.

The Bangor Daily News’ lame coverage of legislative races.

Legislative races, which too often feature a lame-brain lefty and a lame-brain righty.

Jim Fossel’s ultra-boring column in the Maine Sunday Telegram.

Michael Cianchette’s and Amy Fried’s ultra-boring columns in the BDN

Recreational marijuana must be tested for contaminants, but medical pot doesn’t have to be. This makes sense how?

Central Maine Power’s attempts to build transmission lines to turn rural Maine into a hideous industrial wasteland.

The solar and wind industry’s attempts to turn rural Maine into a hideous industrial wasteland.

Speaking of hideous, the Maine Republican Party’s continued opposition to same-sex marriage.

Ranked-choice voting, which excludes people who don’t support either of the top two finishers.

Regular voting, which requires supporting shitty candidates to make sure even shittier candidates don’t win.

Speaking of which: former GOP Congressman Bruce Poliquin and …

Former Democratic Congressman Mike Michaud and …

Current Dem Congresswoman Chellie Pingree. (Is she still in office? It’s hard to tell.)

The entire anti-Trumpian 1st Congressional District, with its holier-than-thou attitude.

The entire pro-Trumpian 2nd Congressional District, with its hatier-than-thou attitude. Maybe it should be gifted to New Hampshire, after all.

School districts that won’t allow transgendered students to use the restroom of their choice. Or play sports. Or exist.

Towns that won’t allow the development of workforce housing because that workforce could include people who aren’t white and might eat their pets.

School districts that ban books because they might teach kids about LGBTQ issues, inherent racism, or what kinds of idiots serve on their school boards.

The Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine’s insistence that banning assault weapons somehow restricts our god-given right to hunt.

God, for allegedly giving us the right to hunt with assault weapons.

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills’ refusal to support actual gun-safety measures.

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills’ refusal to support farmworkers’ rights.

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills’ refusal to support sovereignty for Indigenous tribes.

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills.

State House Republican leader “Billy Bob” Faulkingham’s use of his redneck nicknames to make it appear he supports doofus rights.

Republican congressional candidate Austin Theriault locating his business in North Carolina, buying his truck in North Carolina and spending lots of time in his North Carolina townhouse.

The state Department of Health and Human Services’ continued incompetence in handling child protection cases.

The state Department of Corrections’ continued incompetence in handling juvenile detention cases.

The state Department of Education’s continued failure to educate.

The state Department of Economic and Community Development’s continued failure to do whatever the hell it’s supposed to be doing.

Billionaire Federalist Society hotshot and Maine resident Leonard Leo’s plan, according to the Financial Times, to spend a ton of money to “crush liberal dominance where it’s most insidious,” which, according to him, is in the news media.

Political analysis in the aforementioned news media from Leonard Leo-funded putz Matthew Gagnon.

Political analysis from former Portland mayor Ethan Strimling, also a putz, although not a Leonard Leo-funded one.

Elected probate judges, many of whom possess much the same ethical standards as Donald Trump.

County government: If it disappeared, hardly anyone would notice.

Did I mention inherent racism? If not, add that to the list.

Please flush.

And let’s not forget that snotty-ass columnist whose e-mail address is aldiamon@herniahill.net.
