It’s hard enough to keep indigenous art alive and relevant in today’s digital culture. Add battles with cancer to the task and one begins to appreciate the remarkable Passamaquoddy canoe craftsman and basketmaker David Moses Bridges. Bridges, whom the Maine Arts Commission has honored as a Traditional Arts Fellow, continues to pursue his craft while fighting the second cancer he’s faced since 2013. A documentary about his life and work made by Maine filmmaker Thom Willey, Rhythms of the Heart, screens tonight at SPACE Gallery (538 Congress St., Portland) as part of a benefit for Bridges. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Suggested donation: $20. 828-5600. space538.org.
