The Act of Killing is a very unsettling, but very important, documentary about politically sanctioned murder and the way time changes history and its makers. It focuses on two past members of a death squad in Indonesia who slew hundreds of allegedly communist ethnic Chinese during a right-wing military takeover of the country in the mid ’60s. The killers perform in elaborate recreations of their crimes, gradually losing their sense of detachment from the horrors they perpetrated as the film progresses. It screens at SPACE Gallery (538 Congress St., Portland) at 8 p.m. Tix: $8. 828-5600. space538.org.
